もともとは明治時代に定められた春季皇霊祭（しゅんきこうりょうさい）という祭事だったのが昭和時代に「春分の日」と改められたのがこの祝日の始まりです。「自然をたたえて、生物をいつくしむ」という意味のある春分の日は先祖の霊を敬う日でもあり、同じ時期に「お彼岸」があるのはこのためです。天文学的に言えば春分の日は昼の長さと夜の長さが同じになる日でもあるので、古来の人々はこの日を不思議な日と考えていたようです。
